Great to see that the Bombastic Meatbats will be releasing a new album on October 19th called ‘More Meat’:

Remember the good old days, when jazz-fusion wasn’t all about showing off your chops, and was more about creating sweeping moods, and the importance of songwriting? Well, the Bombastic Meatbats certainly remember those days. Having obviously studied the classic early-to-mid ’70s recordings of such fusion greats as Return to Forever and Jeff Beck, the group (which includes such members as Grammy winning Red Hot Chili Peppers/Chickenfoot drummer Chad Smith, guitarist Jeff Kollman, keyboardist Ed Roth, and bassist Kevin Chown), is back with their sophomore full-length album. Aptly titled, “More Meat,” the album is jam-packed follow-up to last year’s critically acclaimed “Meet the Meatbats,” and once more, is released by Warrior Records via Universal Music Group Distribution.

The album is available for pre order now!

You’re a huge fan of the Beatles and all sorts of jangle pop. How does that affect your writing and performing for an all-instrumental album like Fuzz Universe? Is the instrumental format liberating or constraining—or both?

The Beatles are kind of my musical DNA. If I could sing like them, write like them, and make girls jump up and down and scream like they did, then I would never have to play instrumental music at all. But for some reason, playing athletic things on the guitar always came easier to me. So I try to do that in a musical way that even a Beatles fan like me could listen to. More specifically, I try to learn lots of chords from ’60s and ’70s pop songs and use them as the foundation for my melodies. On this album, I used a lot of min7b5 and 7sus4 chords. I love the sound of those chords, and I feel they are terribly underused in heavy rock. I felt it was my mission to bring up the average.

Also, it’s funny you mention the Beatles, because when I was working on the chorus for the opening track, “Fuzz Universe,” I was suddenly inspired with a chord progression and melody. I ran into my studio to record it while it was still in my head. First I recorded the chords, then I started overdubbing the melody, and—damn—I realized I had just written the bridge to a very famous Beatles song. I ended up changing it with a couple of chord substitutions and a totally different melody of my own, but you can still sing the Beatles melody over the top and it fits perfectly. I’ll let you guess which song it is.

INTRODUCTION
On September 11th 2010 DirtBox will turn 1 year old!

A lot has happened in the past year and the site has developed into MUCH more than I could have imagined and so we are running a competition to commemorate our first birthday.

PRIZES
Sanyo Pedal Juice Worth $200!!

WHAT TO DO
1. Sign up to become a member of the DirtBox forum.
2. Visit this thread – http://www.dirtbox.net/communi…..-form/#p46
3. Answer the simple question honestly.

HOW DO I WIN?
I will read through EVERY entry to the competition and select those that are honest and genuine. Any SPAM entries will be deleted.
The usernames of those who have made entries will be added to a database. On September 11th 2010 I will close the thread and randomly select one of the usernames from the database; that person has won!
I will then contact that person via PM through the forum to obtain their mailling address etc… and post out the prize ASAP.

RULES
Please read these rules very carefully as anyone not complying to the rules will be banned from the competition. These rules are here to make the competition run smoothly.
- Only one entry per person. C’mon guys be reasonable. No multiple usernames, fake e-mail addresses etc. There are ways to check these things and if anyone is found cheating in this manner they will be banned from Dirt Box altogether.
- Anyone can enter anywhere in the world! Age is not important.
- The competition will close when the thread is locked at some point on September 11th 2010 (GMT), so don’t leave your entries to the last minute, get them in as soon as possible.
- This competition should cost you nothing! I will pay postage and packaging but I am NOT liable for any taxes that your government incurs upon arrival of the prize. You SHOULDN’T have to pay anything as this is a competition prize but there is a chance your government will charge you some kind of VAT or other tax. Again, this is not my fault and you will have to pay these charges.
- There are extra rules in the submission thread.
