Guitarist Recording Collective October 2007 – “Alone”

October 16, 2007

Recording Collective October task was:

October’s task is to play solo guitar. No overdubs, it’s got to be one guitar from finish to end. You can record more than one take obviously but the one you put up has to be a ‘live’ recording of you on guitar. No drop ins, no fiddly electronic stuff.

With this in mind I went for my archtop again and wrote a short melody which I then harmonized solo jazz guitar stylee.

Guitarist Recording Collective September 2007 – “IKEA Freakout”

September 24, 2007

New recording for the Guitarist Recording Collective. September’s task was to:

Create something original which pays homage to one of your favourite guitarists.

So I quickly ( cramming in some time for the collective! ) came up with the following song, hopefully not too hard to work out who I am attempting to pay homage to ;)

Guitarist Recording Collective July 2007 – “Reflection”

July 11, 2007

The July task for the Recording Collective was to:

Make a piece of music involving a palindrome, where the second half of *something* is the reverse of the first half. This can be the main melody, the riff, the chord sequence, whatever you want… but something has to be palindromic.

I started by taking a repeating two bar chord change for the A section with a B section consisting of a set of descending chords.

For the second half of the piece, I reversed the B section then swapped the two chords around in the A section, ending up with a structure like:

[A] [B] [A] [B] [rev B] [rev A] [rev B] [rev A]

Basically a mirror image hence why I called it ‘Reflection’ :) .

Also opted to do some filming again and recorded myself laying down the main lead guitar part on camera :o :

Guitarist Recording Collective May 2007

May 25, 2007

Just finished off a quick recording for this Month’s Guitarist Recording Collective. This month’s task was to:

Solo piece, ensemble, vocal, fingerpicked, strummed, nylon, steel; whatever you like. Just try to keep it acoustic and the thought of Summer in your head.

Bit different this time, opted to film it! :o
So here it is, a little piece about a joyous bird… ‘The ‘Appy Sparra’:

Pieces of 7

April 4, 2007

The Guitarist Recording Collective task for April was to:

You can play anything you like………………. anything, any style, any speed, absolutely anything…… except it must be done in an odd time signature, and by that I mean in a beat of 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 etc.
So, anything as long as there’s no 4/4…..!!! oh yeah, and no covers! everything has to be original thought!

I dug up some odd time signature drum loops and came up with something a bit more on the Rock side.

Sleep Walk

March 16, 2007

March 2007 Guitarist Recording Collective task was to :

take the song “Sleepwalk,” and do what you will with it. I mean it. Mangle the thing, take the ditty for a spin in a completely different genre, a new style, or a re-engineering old style. Above all, have fun with this well-worn tune.

I’d been dying to get my archtop on a recording so this was the perfect chance :) . Went for a slightly jazzy-funky vibe on this one.

Ronk

December 2, 2006

It’s been a while since I did anything for the collective so after seeing the December task I thought I’d have a bash.

The December task was to:

Compose and play a piece that shows your true ‘guitar colours’. Your guitar playing in it’s best light. If your natural inclination is metal, do a metal piece, if it’s country, do a country piece. There are no restrictions at all. Do whatever you feel comfortable doing.

I woke up in the mood to record something so dug out some drum loops and came up with ‘Ronk’.

Not sure if it really is where I am musically at the moment but the idea of using cool beats and heavy guitar is something that I really like.
