Steve Vai “Naked Tracks” now on CD with Transcriptions

May 29, 2009

It’s been a good while since Vai’s Naked Tracks were available for digital download, but early this June the tracks will be available on CD for the first time.

The CDs will be released as a special limited-edition digipack box set. Fives CDs containing backing tracks from Passion and Warfare, Sex & Religion, Fire Garden, Alive In An Ultra World and The Ultra Zone.

The Naked Tracks section of vai.com has been updated with info on each song detailing key, time signature, what Vai was thinking etc.

In the liner notes you can download from vai.com, I give various parameters regarding the key, scale, time signature, etc. of the track, but these are just road maps that you may choose to take. There are a lot of dirt roads off the main highway. You are encouraged to experiment with alien notes. You know… the little green ones!

But that’s not all!

The ‘Little Black Dots’ section of vai.com will provide downloadable Tablature of the songs!:

Soon it will be possible to download the transcriptions for these pieces of music. This can assist in the recreation of most recorded parts on the song including guitar solo transcriptions and tab. This new feature will appear in Vai.com’s “Little Black Dots” section of the site in the coming weeks.

Speakers: 40% of Your Tone – Premier Guitar

May 28, 2009

Forgot to blog this when the June Edition of Premier Guitar was published, luckily the RSS feed just popped up with the article :) .

Informative post from Tony Pasko talking about how speakers affect your overall sound as well as the common wattage vs volume problem:

The thing you want to consider is that what you like or dislike about your guitar tone could very well be the speaker—it is after all 40 percent of your tone. Picture your amplifier as a sports car. Now picture your speakers as the tires. The wrong speaker in an amp is like having bicycle wheels on your sports car. That’s how important the speakers are.

Wattage vs. Volume
This is a huge misconception among musicians. These two ratings are not the same. 50 watts isn’t half as loud as 100 watts. Wattage really comes into play when you start considering your function—how many watts is going to produce the level of volume you need for band practice, or playing a club?

Spotify coming to mobiles | musicradar.com

May 28, 2009

Great to see that progress has been made in bringing Spotify to Mobiles:

The developers of Spotify have been showing off a new version of their music streaming software that runs on the Android G1 phone.

This is a significant development; so far, users have only been able to listen to Spotify via their computers, but if it becomes available ‘in the pocket’, it could pose a serious threat to the dominance of Apple’s iPod/iTunes platform.
