Malmsteen Modern Guitars Interview
October 24, 2008
Cool interview with the Speedy Swede over on Modern guitars:
Matt: A lot of shredders get caught up in high-velocity playing and tend to forget about the importance of melody. How do you work out an instrumental? Do you work out the melody first and then fast passages will come later? Because a lot of guys tend to be so caught up in speed that the melody just gets totally lost.
Yngwie: The way I’ve always looked at it is that no matter what you play, it has to be melodic. If you play in 1/64 notes or if you’re playing very slow, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you’re playing. It has to be melodic. If you play a run, it’s like a scale or something like this, it has to be valid. If you play it fast and very clean then it sounds very exciting.
That was the whole idea behind Nicola Paganini and Franz Liszt and those guys back in the early 19th century. They were the first breed of the virtuosos, so to speak. In a true sense, you know? There are people like Mozart and Vivaldi, they were considered virtuosos, as well. But, they didn’t play on that. They weren’t just virtuosos. Liszt and Paganini, they were very into that. Sometimes, there’s a certain value in virtuosity. I think it’s important to not to put all your eggs in one basket. I spend many hours on songwriting and if you listen to the songwriting and production on the new album, that’s all my work. That’s what I spend my time on, the lyrics and the production and the arrangements. Solos take me five minutes. I just roll and go, that’s it.

United States / Paul Gilbert & Freddie Nelson, 2008
Album Review
Author: Mike (PGM 10th KATTA!! on the Racer X board)Didn’t Paul saw that this album would BLOW OUR MINDS?!?!
We’ll hell f*cking yeah (’scuse my language) it DOES!!
All I can say is that it is a mix of everything you’ve ever wanted… I hear all kinds of my favorite stuff in there. From Queen to Loudness-like stuff, Mr. Big and in between… but it is unique. You gotta listen to it all, cause Freddie will make you jaw drop, and Paul will make your jaw drop, lol!! There is some GREAT playing in there, some INCREDIBLE solo’s for the song, and it’s great to see Paul in this format again!!
One thing I really notice now in Paul’s playing is his next level… Being more melodic to match the vocal lines, and he’s using a lot of great effects to really polish the song. I truly cant believe he had time to make an amazing album like this while he is busy as f*ck!! And Freddie is amazing… His screams (there are a few in there and you gotta listen to find them) are so friggen spot on cool!! It’s like this just touches the surface… I can really see him in a Heavy Metal format as well!!
You guys are in for a TREAT!!!!
BTW…. Like Paul, Freddie is from the same area of PENN. So many amazing players from there, and it must be the water.
Thanks Paul, your playing is AMAZING, and Freddie is AMAZING!!
Bluesjamtracks Funk Fusion Mini-bundle
October 21, 2008
Hot news from bluesjamtracks.com:
…there’s a treat for Guthrie Govan fans in the form of a special “Funk Fusion” mini-bundle. We’ve made a jam track with four distinct sections, and we’re going to feed Guthrie beer until he plays four fantastic solos, one for each section. Think he can do it? Yeah, of course he can! Like the Contemporary set, the bundle will include a full-length jam track, Guthrie’s solos in audio and video form, and full transcriptions. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s ready to download.
Awesome!
Modern Guitars Interview with Slash
October 11, 2008
Interview with the Top Hat Troubadour himself, Slash, over on Modern guitars talking about the new Limited Edition Gibson and Epiphone Les Paul Goldtops, the great man Les Paul, a new book and a new recording project:
Working on a solo record, which is really my first solo record where I’m not using a fixed band, has just been a new experience for me because I don’t have to answer to anybody.
And, you know, it’s a little liberating in a way. But, at the same time, while I’m doing that, I’m still in Velvet Revolver and we’re still looking for a singer, and we’re still writing every day as a group. I like to be able to do it all, you know?
