Guthrie Govan licks transcribed
August 31, 2006
As I’ve been transcribing some licks from a couple of Guthrie Govan‘s songs from his CD ‘Erotic Cakes‘ I thought I may as well add a Transcriptions section to the site in case I’m in the productive mood to do some more transcribing

Prince:Purple Rain Improv

Video of me improvising over a backing of Prince’s epic Purple Rain. The chord progression really lends itself to some emotive playing. Pardon the *very* loose intro…*cough*

Guthrie Govan – ‘Erotic Cakes’ – Review
August 25, 2006
Now that I’ve had time to digest the album, I’ve been listening to it pretty non-stop all week
, I feel I can give my own small review.
First thing is the sound. The guitar tones and production on the album are superb. I can see why time was taken getting the sound just right. The guitar sound is crisp, clear and rich and seems to have a soulful tone to it, though that’ll be Mr Govan’s fingers
. Still, I’m positive Suhr and Cornford might sell a few more products after people hear this.
Now, having been aware of Mr Govan for a while, hearing his playing in Guitar Techniques magazine, seen video footage of him play and even attended a workshop with the bearded maestro, I was expecting some amazing playing on this CD, but, WOW! Technically, I knew it would blow my mind, but it is the creative ideas and phrasing of Mr Govan that astounds me. Taking lines and twisting/sliding/tapping/bending them into something unique and distinctly ‘Govanesque’.
Song wise the album features 11 tracks, most of which I had heard versions of before. Currently my favourite tracks have to be ‘Sevens‘, ‘Ner Ner‘, ‘Uncle Skunk‘ ( hat tip to Zappa and Vai on this one ) and ‘Waves‘. There’s a definite Fusion vibe from the whole album, which I love, lush harmonies overlayed with searing lines and stunning note choice. In saying that, with a track like ‘Rhode Island Shred‘ Guthrie Govan gives the listener a peak into his sheer mastery of all genres on the instrument, blasting out a blistering Country song.
Another nice touch are the CD liner notes. A break down of each song is given, detailing the inspiration behind each song. What is clearly apparent is Mr Govan’s great sense of humour and ability to not take himself too seriously. It’ll be much harder for people to slag him off due to his ‘Alien’ like guitar abilities
.
In summary, a long time coming, but definitely worth the wait!
If you haven’t already…buybuybuy!
