It’s Arrived!

My impatience was such that I finally decided to order the DVD from CD Universe opting for their super fast express International delivery option which cost more than the DVD itself. Yes, I know.

Ordered on the 11th December the DVD arrived yesterday to my ultimate delight :). I wasted no time at all in unwrapping and popping it into my DVD player, which thankfully can easily handle NTSC as can my telly.

The show opens with the classic Billy Sheehan track, ‘Shyboy’ in which both Vai and Sheehan simply astound with hyper-fast, hyper-slick playing. Wow what a beginning! From then on it’s a 2 1/2 hour show of sheer bliss for any fan. Vai’s playing is simply sublime and they way he moves and abuses the guitar is a sight to behold. The sound is trully amazing and though many have found fault with the camera work I never noticed anything glaringly bad, hey I was in heaven watching this :).

Highlights for me have to be the performances of ‘The Animal’, ‘Blue Powder’, ‘Bad Horsie’, ‘Little Wing’ and ‘Whispering a Prayer’. The antics of Vai during ‘Bad Horsie’ have to be seen to be believed! The bonus disc features mock interviews/lessons with Dave Weiner, Billy Sheehan and Vai’s tech, Thomas Nordegg. All filmed tongue firmly in cheek ;). The audio commentary is also a delight with Vai giving some insight into how some songs came about etc. though I loved it for the friendly banter between bandmates who get a kick out of playing.

All in all well worth the wait ( O.K I cheated a wee bit ) a two disc set of over 3.5 hours worth of Vai magic, I know I’ll be coming back and watching this DVD time and time again, experiencing something new with every viewing.

The Vai Live at the Astoria London DVD is out now, but alas only the NTSC version so I must order from the US, a potential 2 - 4 week wait!
